Sonnet 999
I wonder if you ponder just like me
All that could have been, if life did permit
Many more months of joyful harmony
Free from the black dog’s bottomless pit
Two trips around the sun and it’s all changed
My yearning turned to bitter resentment
From one another, we’re now estranged
All this I thought would lead to contentment
Instead my soft heart aches with each beat
As you leap forward, unaffected
I lay here remembering that last meet
The last time our sweet words were connected
But the beauties of life persist in the present
Vivid sunsets, vibrant rainbows, the vain moon’s crescent
